"The gulf between the "haves" and "have nots" in Google's 16,000+ ranks will now have become even more stark than ever, with the folks hired more than three years ago rolling in wealth and everyone else feeling like they missed the boat. This will exacerbate morale issues. If the stock doesn't recover, it will also likely force the company to consider raising its cash compensation as a percentage of total comp, to placate those who missed the pre-IPO bonanza."

"Our interview this morning is with David Sacks, CEO of Geni.com, an online family tree and social networking site, as well as Yammer, the instant messaging startup spun out of Geni.com at TechCrunch50. David has a unique perspective on the Southern California technology environment, having been the COO of PayPal before its acquisition by EBay, and having had the full Silicon Valley experience. "Although experts in the social media space have been talking about how businesses might adopt microblogging tools like Twitter and Plurk, only recently have we started to see a series of new vendors cropping up in the enterprise microblogging space. This has been due in part to businesses needing to figure out how Twitter can benefit the enterprise. The fact that the mainstream press has started covering this topic has also helped to push things along (see Businessweek’s CEO Guide to Microblogging if you need proof).
Given the recent focus on business microblogging and the emergence of some new players like Yammer and Utterli (Formerly Utterz, Utterli has been around for a little over a year but just rebranded and is now becoming more enterprise-centric), it felt like as good a time as any to write a post about the business value of microsharing within the enterprise."

"Web 2.0 is a game changer – it holds the potential to turbo-charge back office functions, foster collaboration and transform every business unit in the enterprise. Yet the resistance occurs when it comes down to implementing Web 2.0 because it represents a series of shifts that challenge traditional business culture and models of leadership. How often have I heard the knee-jerk reaction, “we can’t let our customers talk to each other†or “we don’t share our data†or “we are going to upgrade to a new platform – we are on a three year plan to get it done†"

"While Wall Street writhes in agony, how are things in the land of tech? Well, maybe not business as usual. But there are certainly worse places to be."

"What’s the outlook for software-as-a-service vendors as the current financial and credit maelstrom continues? The question is especially relevant for ISVs, IT solution providers and entrepreneurs who are weighing up whether now is the time to press ahead with SaaS initiatives. It seems inevitable that the blow-up on Wall St will make credit scarcer and more expensive for everyone. But if there’s less money being spent in the economy as a whole, does that mean more or less being spent on SaaS?"

"At first glance this parallel society has been made, quite literally, in the image of our own. But in truth it's more like a Photoshopped image — the nice parts accentuated, the inappropriate bits cropped away. So it goes with any online community, of course. Behavior must be moderated and a communal ethos must be preserved; Wild West cliches aside, total freedom at any entity like this would sink it in a storm of lawsuits, flame wars and gridlocked cacophony. So directors of community exist. And while the job of nurturing and policing any online realm would make for a fascinating study, I was particularly curious about how it worked at Flickr."
